Were uniting to put on a hell of a show. We come on stage together, do a couple of songs, then our own material. Its the experience of a lifetime for fans.</p> <p><strong>Have you noticed your audience changing over the years? </strong></p> <p>Theyve got older and have families but theyre just as excited and passionate as before. Thats what its all about. They believe theyre part of something special.</p> <p><strong>When Take That did their last tour, the audience was reportedly comprised of extremely drunk middle-aged women have you noticed that with you? </strong></p> <p>Not necessarily. Yes, some of the fans want to drink let them have fun. All we know is theyre enjoying the show. You can tell by their faces, when they see both the bands up there, its like watching two entities they never would have expected to see at the same time coming together they find it unbelievable.</p> <p><strong>Whats the most extreme thing a fans done to meet you? </strong><br />Theyve come to my house, hidden on the tour bus that happened a lot when we were younger, not so much now but there are still fanatics out there.</p> <p><strong>Have you ever had to call the police?</strong></p> <p>Some of them have become crazy and even over the past couple of years Ive had some situations. You just need to monitor things. You need to keep watchful.</p> <p><strong>You were 12 when you joined the Backstreet Boys if you had kids would you let them enter showbiz at such a young age? </strong></p> <p>Probably not. You sacrifice a lot to work in this business. You lose relationships, lose reality, lose normality. I wouldnt want that for my kids. I guess all you can do is raise them to the point where they can make their own decisions and I think 12 is too young for that. Id prefer my kids to do sports instead.</p> <p><strong>What lessons has the music industry taught you?</strong></p> <p>You have to be careful and choose the right people to have in your life. When youre in a celebrity bubble, youll meet people whose intentions arent pure and will try to take advantage. You need to learn how to weed out the bad. People dont realise the characters and masks people wear in this business are just that. Actors, entertainers and people in this industry have ways to mask their true intentions, so you need to be careful.</p> <p><strong>Has it made you more suspicious of people?</strong></p> <p>Definitely but I want to be open as well. I like meeting new people. You just have to become a quick judge of character.</p> <p><strong>You had a heart problem whats your health like now?</strong></p> <p>I changed my lifestyle, got in the gym, changed my eating habits and eliminated alcohol from my life so the problem went away. I had the early signs of cardiomyopathy but it was so early on it was possible for me to rectify it by changing my lifestyle. They cant detect it now. Ill drink at a special occasion but the scare made me change my behaviour.</p> <p><strong>How much of the original problem was down to drinking? </strong></p> <p>Some cardiomyopathies can be induced by toxification of the heart due to drugs and alcohol youre basically poisoning your heart. Thats what was happening with me. It was all pretty much down to drugs and alcohol but Im much better now.</p> <p><strong>What are the perks of fame? </strong></p> <p>Having fans, so I can create a solo album and release it and tour. It means I can have a secondary career and create my own music videos. We released my new album in individual territories Japan, Canada and then Germany and I was able to write and direct my video, which Im very happy about. Im writing screenplays as well.</p> <p><strong>Why does solo success elude you in the UK?</strong></p> <p>Im only one guy. I just got off tour with NKOTBSB and I self-funded my record, wrote it all myself and did the videos. Weve done individual distribution deals with individual territories. If UK fans decide they want my solo material, just let me know. Im putting together a killer solo show. It has a space theme and starts with me in a cool space helmet. If they want it, they just need to ask.</p> <p><strong>Whats your most extravagant purchase? </strong></p> <p>I just bought a Paul Reed Smith guitar, which cost $12,000. Collecting guitars is a hobby because I love playing them. It has a blue finish on the front and is white on the back with gold pick ups. From the struggles of 2002s <em>Now or Never</em> (It just wasnt me) Carter has come a long way. He kicked his drug and alcohol addiction, went public with serious family drama on the reality show House of Carters and is now happily back to his boy band roots. If you lie with dogs, youre gonna get fleas, Carter tells <a href="http://streetdate.radio.com/">Street Date</a>. The biggest hurdle was cleaning house.<br /> Read on as Carter talks about laboring away on this summers <strong>NKOTBSB</strong> fusion tour, what its like to travel with eight other men and how boy-band mania has reached new levels of super-fandom.<span id="more-23967"></span></p> <p><strong>SD: Your last record was 8 years ago. Tell us why you waited so long to get back into the studio for <em>Im Taking Off</em>.</strong><br /> NC: I needed to take time to figure out who I am and what music I want to give to the world. I had to live life and gain experience so that I would have the material to put out a great album. Im the best I have ever been. There was no better time than now to throw that energy out there.</p> <p><strong>SD: What kind of music were you listening to while recording this album? Were there any unlikely sources of inspiration?</strong><br /> NC: <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Men+Without+Hats">Men Without Hats</a> comes to mind. My playlists are constantly changing: one day Ill be listening to <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Lloyd">Lloyd</a> or <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Fleetwood+Mac">Fleetwood Mac</a>s <em>Rumours</em>. Depends on the day and the mood Im in.</p> <p><strong>SD: <em>Im Taking Off</em> feels a lot like an extension of your <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Backstreet+Boys">Backstreet Boys</a> days, whereas your first album was more about you as a solo artist. Was this intentional in a back to your roots sort of way?</strong><br /> NC: I feel as though this is really my first solo album. <em>Im Taking Off</em> is more me than my first [album]. I didnt know who I was or what I was doing back then. I love some of the songs but it just wasnt me.</p> <p><strong>SD: Do you have a favorite track on the album?</strong><br /> NC: My favorite track is probably Falling Down. I love that song. When I sing it live, something takes over and it takes me to another place.</p> <p><strong>SD: Youre touring with Backstreet Boys and NKOTB this summer. Have you found that boy-band mania dies down as your audience gets older?</strong><br /> NC: Not at all! If anything, the mania is at an all new level now that fans from BSB and NKOTB have joined together. The only difference I can see is that they are a lot more respectful.</p> <p><strong>SD: As one of five children, its safe to say youre used to dealing with many different personalities in close quarters but whats it like to travel with eight other men?</strong><br /> NC: We each have our own bus and some of the guys in NKOTB share theirs. We all get along great and give each other space when needed. Our riders have calmed down over the years, so nothing too crazy. Whats a typical day at sea like with you guys?</strong><br /> NC: There are no typical days on a BSB cruise! They are filled with activities and shows and tons of surprises! Playing Twister with 10 people was really funny. Rear ends and faces ended up way too close to one another.</p> <p><strong>SD: Youve been very open about recovering from drug and alcohol addiction. Whats been the biggest hurdle?</strong><br /> NC: The biggest hurdle was cleaning house. I had to surround myself with happy, healthy, positive people. I was getting my feelings and emotions out as well as conquering some personal goals and achieving them.</p> <p><strong>SD: Youre a successful musician, youve acted in films and reality TV, theres even footage of you multi-tasking in the kitchen: cooking and singing at the same time. What are some other things you want to try in your career?</strong><br /> NC: Right now Im studying guitar. I want to be able to play like <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/Prince">Prince</a> or <a href="http://www.last.fm/music/John+Lennon">John Lennon</a>. Im also writing my own scripts.</p> <p><strong>SD: Youve been in the industry since you were a kid so youve had some really special celebrity experiences. Has there ever been a moment when youve gotten especially star-struck, or thought, I cant believe this is happening to me right now.</strong><br /> NC: Celebrities I can handle. I would be star struck to meet people like Norman Vincent Peale or Albert Einstein. So in order to sing and write that song, you have to have something to relate to.<br /><br />The song on the album that really hits home for Nick is That song is about being in a relationship and knowing that you are screwed, he says. You love that person and youre addicted.<br /><br />m in a relationship right now two and half years, Nick says.
